Clampdown on Somali pirates sparks sharp drop in global piracy | GlobalPost

Shipping piracy hit its lowest level in six years in 2013 with 264 cases recorded following a sharp drop in attacks by the once notorious Somalia pirates, the International Maritime Bureau said in a report released Wednesday.

The single biggest reason for the drop in worldwide piracy is the decrease in Somali piracy off the coast of East Africa, IMB Director Pottengal Mukundan said in a statement.

IMB said there has been a 40 percent drop in shipping piracy worldwide since 2011 when Somali piracy was at its peak with 237 attacks out of the total 439 cases that year.
