SAN DIEGO – The U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection made a huge drug bust about 170 miles off the coast of San Diego Friday, officials announced Wednesday.
The drug smugglers were caught tossing bales of marijuana worth more than $28 million from a small boat into the ocean, US Coast Guard said.
CBP along with crew members from the Coast Guard Cutters Mellon and Sea Otter retrieved 71 packages of marijuana worth an estimated $28.6 million as well as 30 pound of methamphetamine worth about $600,000.
The seized drugs weighing nearly 3,500 pounds were offloaded Wednesday at Naval Base San Diego.
The four accused smugglers from Mexico turned over to the interagency San Diego Marine Task Force.
