Police scrap plan to install detectors at ports | The Jakarta Post

The Bali Police have scrapped a plan to position two sophisticated mobile X-ray vehicles at Gilimanuk and Padangbai, the island’s two major ferry ports. Instead, the vehicles, which were donated by the provincial administration in late 2012, are to be deployed to provide an additional layer of security for high profile events, including the upcoming Miss World pageant and the APEC Summit.

Bali Police chief Insp. Gen. Arif Wachyunadi told reporters recently that the police classified the high-tech units as a special tool that would only be used sparingly for special events.

“Yes, the initial plan, indeed, was to secure the two main gateways to Bali. But it was just a plan. We have decided not to place the units permanently at the two ports,” Arif admitted.
