Port Strategy – Energy needs a port voice too

Living in the Northeastern US, it’s impossible not to be thinking about energy issues; in spite of decreases in overall net energy imports, this part of the country is still dependent on imported oil and gas.
Against this backdrop, the US Coast Guard, in conjunction with the Maritime Administration, has been conducting hearings regarding a proposed ‘Port Ambrose’ – a liquefied natural gas import terminal that would be sited twenty miles offshore, out in the Atlantic.
Predictably, in a round of public hearings, the environmentalists (who have dubbed Liberty Gas, the project sponsor, as ‘The Dracula Monster’) have railed against the facility – which would be a private facility outside the purview of the Port Authority.
