Ark Royal sets sail for the scrapyard – Defence Management

One of the British Navy’s most iconic vessels, HMS Ark Royal, has set out on its final voyage – to a scrapyard in Turkey.

Crowds – including former crew members – gathered at Portsmouth to see tugs tow the ship out of harbour at the start of her journey to destruction.

With a displacement of 22,000 tons and nearly 700ft long, the former Royal Navy flagship was launched in June 1981 and saw service in the Adriatic during the Bosnian conflict and in the Persian Gulf during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
